Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé! Each year on the third Thursday of November, at precisely one minute after midnight, thousands and thousands of bottles of the fruity Beaujolais Nouveau begin their race to the villages and towns of France and the rest of the world. By French law, no producer can release his or her Beaujolais until 12:01 a.m.--and not a second sooner. Throughout the country, the French celebrate this arrival of the first wines of the vintage. During the celebration, the French take a moment to reflect on the year thus far and consider the potential quality of the other wines from the region.

Beaujolais Nouveau is a light, fruity, fun wine meant to be consumed within a few weeks of being crafted. It is fermented in stainless steel tanks for no more than a few weeks, bottled and drunk as soon as possible. In short, this is the closest the majority of us will ever come to drinking wine as if it were a cluster of grapes. The Beaujolais Nouveau celebration is fun and casual. It's not a time to evaluate the aging potential or the complex structure of the wine we are drinking, but rather a time to enjoy the purest essence of the fruit that gives us the miracle of wine.

Keep in mind, too, that these wines are more than fermented grape juice we love to drink to make us feel good. They're also a miracle of sorts in global transport. The fact that we even have access to these wines so soon after their bottling is amazing. Think of the concentrated organization required to get each drop of wine out of the barrel, into the bottle, into the crate, onto the ship and down to us here in Houston. It's mind-boggling!

Come join us to ring in this year's Beaujolais Nouveau and say hello to your friends and neighbors. We'll also be serving melted raclette in a traditional style over house-made pickles, root vegetables and toast for $7 per plate. And remember, we receive a pretty small quantity of this wine, so when it's gone, it's gone--and there won't be any more until next year.
