Brew Exchange Takes Craft Beer to the Next Level with New Menu

The Brew Exchange is becoming the epicenter of the explosive craft beer movement in Austin. Co-owner Tim Womac has fused his keen business sense with his passion for high-quality, hard-to-find specialty brews to create a pub experience unlike any other in the Capitol City.

At Brew Exchange, the commodity is beer, and lots of it. Prices on the 100+ beers are constantly fluctuating, based on supply and demand. Keeping up with the fluctuating beer prices is both easy and entertaining. Guests can watch the prices rise and fall in real time via the 1960’s style ticker running above the bar. Prices also fluctuate in real time on several “big boards” (flat screen televisions) throughout the bar.

The Exchange offers 72 beers on tap (120 varieties in all, including bottles) that are grouped into categories—India Pale Ales, pilsners, ambers, porters, stouts, and so forth—and each category is loaded with craft brew options from around the country and globe. Womac and his team constantly research trends, scour beer blogs and forums, and hunt for rare beers, which are big draws at the Exchange. “We look for beers that taste good,” said Womac. “Simple, I know, but simple it is.” The infamous draft wall, which is rotated weekly, features more than twenty locally brewed beers, including Live Oak HefeWeizen, Real Ale Firemans #4, and (512) Pecan Porter.

The idea is to encourage patrons to try new beers and in doing so, educate their palates. “The first part about knowing beers is understanding how beers are brewed. What ingredients—such as hops, barley, fruits, or wheat—go into them and how much,” explained Womac. “When you learn that process, you can taste beers and taste or smell certain ingredients within each beer.”

Womac, who has been experimenting with flavor combinations, recently created an innovative menu focused on original beer cocktails, such as the Steam Roller ($8), a mélange of St. Germain, lemon, cherry Heering, Woodford, and Santo brown ale; the Raspberry Brewgria ($8), a fusion of Mathilde Framboise, Lillet Blanc, muddled raspberries, and UFO White; and the Galliano Shandy ($8), a mix of Galliano, fresh orange juice, and UFO White. “There are not many places doing this, and we want to introduce people to these cocktails,” said Womac. “When people taste them, they will not believe how well the pairings go together.”

The flip side of the new menu features updated traditional mixed drinks reminiscent of New York in the twenties, including the Old Fashioned ($9), a combination of Woodford, cherry bitters, a dash of simple, muddled cherry and orange, and soda; the Sazerac ($9), a fusion of Templeton rye, simple, Peychaud’s bitters, lemon peel, and Herbsaint absinthe rinse; and the Brooklyn ($9), a mix of Templeton rye, Amaro Nonino, Mathilde Framboise, and cherry bitters.

The Brew Exchange is an inspired endeavor—and the Austin venue for beer enthusiasts.

The Brew Exchange is located at 706 W. 6th St. in downtown Austin, and is open Monday through Friday, 3 p.m. to 2 a.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 12 p.m. to 2 a.m. For more information on Brew Exchange, call 512.366.5727 or visit www.brewexchangeaustin.com.

When the scores were tallied, the French Judges were convinced that the top-ranking white wine was one of their own. In fact, it was Chateau Montelena's 1973 Chardonnay, rated above all other wines. The results proved that Chateau Montelena could produce some of the world's finest wines, and that California's wine industry had come of age. Join us for a tasting to remember as we celebrate Chateau Montelena's rich history with Brian Baker from the winery, March 27th from 7-9PM. Price: $20*plus tax and gratuity.

Big News for Arro!

Arro Bids Adieu to Burnet Road
Forthcoming Modern French Concept Relocated to West Sixth Street

AUSTIN – March 19, 2013 – Arro, the latest restaurant concept developed by ELM Restaurant Group (24 Diner, Easy Tiger Bake Shop & Beer Garden), will open in the coming months at 601 W. Sixth St., the former site of Haddingtons American Tavern. Originally slated for Burnet Road, the project was relocated to the downtown location after months of negotiations between the two groups.

Arro, which is designed as a casual interpretation of a French restaurant, takes its inspiration from the French phrase “arroser la vie,” loosely translated to “make a toast to life” or “baste life.” At the helm will be ELM executive chef/partner, Andrew Curren, accompanied by his wife, pastry chef Mary Catherine Curren. The couple has dreamed of working alongside one another since they met at the Culinary Institute of America in New York. Drew’s handiwork at 24 and Easy Tiger has earned many accolades from local press as well as mentions in Food & Wine, Bon Appétit, Saveur, Condé Nast Traveler and Texas Monthly.

Arro will be open seven nights a week and offer brunch on Sunday. Customers can enjoy a light meal consisting of simple single-item options or composed plates, indulge in a traditional three-course menu for around $20, order a selection of French classics served family-style or pop in for a late night cocktail or coffee with a perfectly executed dessert.

The focus of Chef Drew’s kitchen will be a wood-fired grill, and he will continue his philosophies of preparing all food to exacting standards in house and incorporating local and organic products whenever possible. Mary Catherine and her team will craft a thoughtful menu of both classic and seasonal desserts on site, and bread will be baked fresh daily at Easy Tiger.

Interior designer Veronica Koltuniak of VeroKolt will be responsible for the building remodel, and Ryan Rhodes of Land will provide graphic design.

The team anticipates a late spring/early summer opening.

TEXAS vs. THE WORLD
A VARIETAL SHOWDOWN

When you ask the average Texan ‘what do you think of Texas wine?’ you almost always, without exception get one of two responses back. Either they haven’t had any Texas wine worth remembering or they don’t even see it as an option when there is so much “better” wine out there.

The Texas v. The World Tasting is a series that meets the last Tuesday of each month and is a head-to-head varietal comparison of wines made in Texas, by Texas grown fruit compared to the same varietal in a wine from another world-class growing area.

Each tasting has a featured winery to co-host each tasting along side of GUSTO and the Texas Wine and Food Consortium. The producer is there to shed light, lead discussions and answer questions about making wine in Texas. GUSTO Sommeliers are there to lead discussion and answer questions on the other world-class wines in the tasting. This tasting is intended be relaxed, social and fun; as well as being great for networking with other wine enthusiasts and professionals.
_____________________________________________________

This tasting series is produced in     partnership with the Texas Wine     and Food Consortium(TXWFC); who’s mission is to promote the Texas wine industry through trade collaboration, events, education and outreach. Join us and support the Texas wine industry. It’s going to open your eyes about the world-class wines being produced right here in our own background.

"Over the past decade, California Pinot Noir has risen from being a wine likely to frustrate and disappoint to being one of the Golden State's most inspiring varietals. It's a turnaround that has brought a profusion of riveting wines and elevated California Pinot Noir to the world wine stage, with quality close on the heels of the grand reds of Burgundy. The rise of Pinot Noir in California has created a profusion of inspirational wines that capture this grape's range of wild berry, raspberry, blueberry, earth and mineral nuances. This is fabulous news for lovers of this celestial yet often temperamental grape." The Wine Spectator

The following appetizers will be served to compliment the wines:

Herb Crusted Beef Tenderloin
Smoked Chicken Quesadillas
New England Style Crab Puffs
