Houston, Texas

Chilled at French Country Wines
2433 Bartlett Street
Houston, Texas 77005
713-882-8773

Wine Foundation Course: Wines of Spain

Level: Beginner
Cost: $180.00 – includes wine & materials
Time: 7.00pm – 9.00pm each session
Date: October 3rd, 10th and 17th.
Location: Chilled at French Country Wines – 2431 Bartlett Street, Houston, TX
Instructor: James King

- For each wine-producing region, describe the style of wines made, identify the key grape varieties used for wine production and the meaning of common regional labeling terms.
 - Describe the meaning of common labeling terms indicating quality or style.
 - Understand what grape varieties are connected to each DO so that you can pick a wine in a restaurant or retailer with confidence, for example Tempranillo – Rioja.

We will cover all the main regions.
Andalusia: Focus on the production, style and quality of Sherry and Manzanilla Sanlúcar de Barrameda & Montilla-Moriles.

Aragon:  Look at this once over looked region sitting in between Rioja and Catalonia. We will focus on Calatyud, Campo de Borja, Somontano and Carinena.

Castile and León:  This vast region stretching from Rioja to the Portugal encompasses such great regions as Bierzo, Cigales, Ribera del Duero, Rueda and Toro and world class grapes: Tempranillo, Mencia and Verdejo.

Castile-La Mancha: This holds the largest single region in Spain, La Mancha, and we will discover what it is doing to convert from bulk wine to quality wine. The other regions we will look at are Jumilla and its steep rise in the last 10 years and Valdepeñas an enclave of La Mancha.

Catalonia: This diverse region seems to have it all: Cava (sparkling wine), Priorat (big bold reds), Penedes (elegant whites) and that is to name only three! We will also discuss Catalunya, Montsant, Tarragona and Terra Alta.

Galicia: The Celtic Jewel of Spain! This region is cooler than the rest of Spain and so produces great whites from Rias Baixas and elegant reds from Monterrei, Ribeira Sacra, Ribeiro and Valdeorras. We will look at the grapes, the terroir and the styles that make these regions so unique.

Basque / Navarra: This region incorporates the imperious Rioja region and we will spend time looking into what makes it so globally known. We will not forget its neighbor Navarra and we will also look at the very unique wines of the Basque region.

Murcia & Valencia:  These regions occupy the South Eastern Mediterranean zone of Spain. We will discover the new wave of styles coming from traditional grapes. The regions we will focus on will be Alicante, Yecla, Alicante and Valcencia.

Deep Ellum Brewing Company
Tasting & Bottle Signing featuring
Brewmaster Drew Huerter

Sigel's-Elite (3209 N Fitzhugh)
Wednesday, October 3rd    5-7pm

Until last week the great craft brews from Deep Ellum Brewing Company were only available on tap at local restaurants. But Deep Ellum Brewmaster Drew Huerter has finally gotten his bottling line up and running and now you can enjoy their fabulous craft brews in the comfort of your own home with their premiere bottling of Farmhouse Wit & Rye Pils.

Join us at Sigel's-Elite ( 3209 N Fitzhugh) on Wednesday, October 3rd from 5 to 7pm as Deep Ellum Brewmaster Drew Huerter leads us through a tasting of his newly bottled releases of Farmhouse Wit and Rye Pils. (With any luck there may be another surprise new bottling to taste as well!) For more information about this free tasting please contact Tommy Clarke at store04@sigels.com or 214/635-3162.

"Rye Pils: Sometimes things just click, like they did in modern day Czech Republic in 1842. Pilsner was born of a singular moment of perfection, bottled lightning. After years of bastardization and watering down, mostly perpetrated by earlier American brewers, the style has been taken back to its former glory by craft brewers world wide. We've decided to take it further and reinvent American-style Pilsner. Unfiltered, dry hopped, mashed with rye malt and brewed with American hops of noble Germanic descent, or the way it should have been done the first time." Drew Huerter

"Farmhouse Wit: Style is a dirty word in Belgium and as you may have guessed can be around our brewery, as well. Saisons, traditionally, are fermented to dry tartness and liberally hopped (for a Belgian style, anyway). Witbiers are slightly sweeter, usually spiced and always pretty light in color. Why compromise? Hoppy for a witbier, possibly? Offbeat for a saison, for sure? Our unique contribution: Triticale, a relatively modern hybrid of wheat and rye. Tradition gets the Deep Ellum treatment." Drew Huerter

Michel Gassier "Nostre Pais" White Wine 2011
Costieres de Nimes, France $17.99 with discounts available for 6 or more wines mix and match and also case discounts.

Wine Advocate 93 points
"I know some readers will find it hard to believe, but the 2011 Nostre Pais Blanc's aromas and rich, honeyed, full-bodied texture reminded me of the famous white Chateauneuf du Pape made by Beaucastel, which sells for three or more times the price.

An amazing blend of 90% Grenache Blanc, 5% Roussanne and 5% Viognier aged six months in French oak, the Roussanne component jumps from the glass, offering notes of acacia flowers, honeysuckle, white peach, quince and pineapple. The flamboyant, intense aromatics are followed by a full-bodied, exuberant, dry white wine that must be tasted to be believed. I suspect this offering has some aging potential, but why risk it given how beautiful it is showing at present. I recommend consuming it over the next several years."
 -Robert Parker, June 2012.

Bringing in our Roussanne
It is interesting to point out that this obscure Rhone White Wine

Grape that is 5% of the Nostre Pais White, Rousanne, is considered to be among the finest

grapes to grow in Texas and Kim McPherson's Texas Roussanne is

unbelievably great.  The color is much like a red Roux in Cajun cooking, but the juice is white.

Michel Gassier "Nostre Pais" Red Wine 2010
Costieres de Nimes, France $17.99 with discounts available for 6 or more wines mix and match and also case discounts.
Wine Advocate/Parker 90pts

"The sexy, medium to full-bodied 2010 Nostre Pais Rouge exhibits velvety tannins along with copious garrigue, lavender, licorice, black currant, cherry, kirsch and spice box characteristics. This luscious, fruit forward, undeniably seductive red is composed of 35% Grenache, 25% Carignan, 20% Mourvedre, 15% Cinsault and 5% Syrah. Aged six months in French oak, mostly on its lees, the price point is ridiculous for a wine of this quality. It is best drunk over the next 1-2 years."

Michel Gassier "Cercius" Old Vines
Cotes du Rhone Villages 2011
$15.99 a bottle with quantity discounts

According to Robert Parker -" The 2011 Cercius Rouge Vieilles Vignes is a blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah aged completely in concrete tanks. This is a big wine, especially for a 2011, tipping the scales at 14.5% alcohol, with some Grenache lots actually higher.
Sweet kirsch liqueur intermixed with notions of smoky camphor and roasted meats are followed by a powerful as well as elegant, opaque purple-colored wine with deep fruit, medium to full body and a long finish. With abundant glycerin and fresh, it is a sexy red to enjoy over the next 2-3 years." 89pts

Chateau Puech-Haut Prestige Languedoc Red Wine
$19.99 per bottle with 6 bottle and case discounts to go
94 points the Rhone Report

"Even better than the brilliant '09, with more elegance and freshness, the 2010 Château Puech-Haut Coteaux du Languedoc Saint-Drézéry Cuvée Prestige is a custom cuvee made by Philippe Cambie and Eric Solomon. An absurd value and a blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre, and 5% Carignan that is aged half in concrete and half in neutral barrel, it possesses a vivid, semi-opaque purple color to go with captivating aromas of raspberry liqueur, cassis, fresh flowers, sappy underbrush, and licorice-like qualities that simply soar from the glass.
On the palate, this impeccably put together Languedoc has a pure, polished profile, with a sappy, resinous tactile sensation in its full-bodied texture, perfect balance, and a long, seamless finish. While no lightweight, it is in no way over the top and has real poise and elegance that is married to plenty of power and depth. While it has the balance and tannin structure to evolve gracefully for upwards of a decade, I see no reason to hold off."

Issue #11, March 2012

Espelt Vineyards near Vilajuiga, Spain, just south of the French/Spanish Border near the Mediterranean Sea--very close to what was considered to be the finest restaurant in the world, El Bulli, which closed last year.

2010 Espelt "Vieilles Vignes" aka "Old Vines" Garnacha
92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"A magnificent custom cuvee for Eric Solomon, this 2010 Espelt Garnacha  was made from high-elevation vineyards in the Costa Brava planted in granite. It was fashioned by the brilliant Jean-Marc Lafage, whose wines are reviewed elsewhere in this article. Composed of 100% Grenache aged 3 months in new French oak, it reveals copious aromas of raspberry jam, black currants, kirsch, flowers and forest floor, full body, terrific fruit, lots of complexity already, and a multidimensional mouthfeel. "  Drink this stunning red over the next 4-5 years. (6/ 2012)

$12.99/one bottle with deep discounts for 6 or more and full case purchase to go.
Made entirely from organic and biodynamically farmed 91-year-old Garnacha grown on slate and granite soils.
