2005 Sawyer
Delightfully balanced between lush fruit and velvety tannins, this is an elegant wine that opens with intriguing aromas of wild blackberries and black currant layered with classic mocha and spice characteristics. On the palate, the dense blackberry is accompanied by cassis, and chocolate, while hints of the signature 'Rutherford Dust' linger on the graceful finish.

2007 J Moss, Ponti Road Vineyard
Dark ripe fruit of plum and black berry followed by a hint of dust, cedar and cigar flavors. This silky smooth complex Rutherford wine brings outstanding depth and body with medium tannins and a lush finish.

2009  Frank Family, Rutherford Reserve
The 2009 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon shows deep purple and blue tones. Fragrant notes of ripe dark fruit reduction, licorice and allspice, along with scents of exotic woods and new leather reveal a masculine and sophisticated side to this Cabernet Sauvignon.  The palate is soft and luscious yet powerful and concentrated, with sweet plum juice flavors, chocolate and hints of coffee, leaving a lasting impression on the palate.  89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot. Aged in French oak.

EAT DRINK LOCAL WEEK FEAST: SIDEWAYS - Austin, Texas

Monday, December 3, 2012 from 7:00PM - 10:00PM
Austin, Texas

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema
1120 S Lamar Blvd
Austin, Texas 78704
512-476-1320

Cost: $70 plus tax per person

Help the Alamo Drafthouse kick off the annual Eat Drink Local Week by watching the greatest film to ever merge a bachelor party and the California wine country, SIDEWAYS along with a feast of great, local, healthy food accompanied by carefully selected wine pairings.

The film stars Paul Giamatti as Miles, an underachieving divorced English teacher, and Thomas Haden Church as his wiseass friend, Jack who’s soon to be married. Instead of taking his best pal to Vegas before he ties the knot Miles decides to help his friend tour the great vineyards of their home state.

It’s not too long before Jack’s shenanigans change the nice and quiet weekend Miles had planned. Giamatti and Haden Church are excellent as the comedic odd couple and writer/director Alexander Payne uses the natural beauty of the wine country to juxtapose the sophomoric actions of these two men.

Filled with great humanity and biting comedy, SIDEWAYS has become one of the modern classics of American cinema. And don’t worry, per Miles’ request, we won’t be serving any freakin’ Merlot!

Asparagus, Passion Fruit, English Cheddar, Strawberries, Buddah's Hand

Chef Shawn Cirkiel Adds Season-Inspired Antipasti to the backspace Menu

The authentic flavors of Naples meld with robust ingredients of the fall season at Chef Shawn Cirkiel’s charming, urban trattoria, the backspace. The restaurant’s new seasonal menu additions highlight hearty local produce, made all the more enticing with half-off pricing during the backspace’s daily happy hour.

the backspace, well-loved for its traditional thin-crust Neapolitan-style pizzas baked in an Italian brick oven, has added a bountiful selection of antipasti dishes ($5 each) that will evolve several times a year to include seasonal offerings. Current fall-inspired antipasti plates include Sunchokes in White Wine with Carrots, Celery and Lemon; Roasted Apples and Fennel with Chili Flake and Parsley; Roasted Butternut Squash with Lemon, Walnut Pesto and Peppers; and Brussels Sprouts with Fontina Cheese, Lemon and Bread Crumbs.

Other antipasti favorites include Balsamic Tomatoes with Cipollini Onions; fresh Beets with Celery and Lemon Zest; Button Mushrooms and Sage in White Wine; the classic Marinated Olives, Lemon, Rosemary and Oregano; the flavorful Roasted Potatoes and Peppers with Olives and Capers; Marinated Eggplant, Capers and Mint; Chickpeas with Tomato and Onions, Basil and Oregano; Marinated Mozzarella, Lemon Zest and Chili Flake; and Spicy Cauliflower with Capers, Calabrese and Lemon.

Demure in plate size but generously portioned, all of the backspace’s antipasti dishes are ideal appetizers for sharing. And because they’re only $5 per plate, diners can enjoy a variety of classic and modern Italian antipasti delights as a meal or while awaiting their favorite backspace pizza.

Currently, all antipasti dishes, in addition to the backspace’s extensive wines-by-the-glass and beer selections, are half off the regular menu price every night from 5 to 6:30 p.m. throughout the restaurant. Guests are encouraged to pop in for a quick bite and a toast, or linger a little longer over several authentic Neapolitan-style courses and a bottle of Italy’s best wine.

Located at 507 San Jacinto Blvd. in downtown Austin, the backspace specializes in authentic Neapolitan pizzas and artisan antipasti served in a warm, urban-style atmosphere. The restaurant is open nightly from 5 to 11 p.m., with valet parking available seven nights a week. For more information about the backspace, call (512) 474-9899, or visit www.backspace-austin.com.

Will Sexton, whose writing credits range from work with Waylon Jennings and Stephen Stills to Joe Ely and Bill Carter, is shaped by the unique diversity of the Austin music scene. Fate and his own sheer talent placed him on stage with local legends before he’d lived out his first decade. Will and his big brother, Charlie, started playing together at the Continental Club when Will was 9 and Charlie was 11. Many of the sounds of his childhood still resonate in his current work. Will received early success in Austin and was signed by MCA at age 16. He has survived in the tough Austin music scene by playing gigs with a variety of notable artists. It is never unusual to go out to catch a show featuring an Austin singer/songwriter and see Will onstage.

Will’s credits as producer and songwriter range from collaborations with Waylon Jennings to psychedelic pioneer Roky Erikson to Steve Earle and punk legend Johnny Thunders. Will has written for MCA and Almo Irving and recorded for MCA, A&M, and Zoo Entertainment. Will was in the New Folk Underground with David Baerwald, which resulted in the co-produced (w/ David Kitay) Lost Highway release Here Comes the New Folk Underground. Will names Terry Allen and Sheryl Crow hitmaker David Baerwald among his favorite writing partners. 2009 marked the completion of new production credits, including Randy Weeks’ Going My Way, and Ruby James’ CD, Happy Now, co-produced with his brother Charlie Sexton. Will also enjoys performing with Charlie Faye, Sahara Smith, and Shannon McNally.

Will has amassed an impressive collection of songs over the years, releasing his first independent album, Scenes From Nowhere, in 2001, which received a four-star review and was honored in the Top 5 Releases of 2001 by the Austin American-Statesman. Bus Stop Gossip, a previously unreleased recording from 2004, was unearthed and released in 2009 and was followed up by Move the Balance in 2010.

St. Supery - Best of the Dollarhide Vineyard with Nicole Willis of St Supery - Lakeway, Texas

Thursday, November 29, 2012 from 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Lakeway, Texas

Lake Travis Wine Trader
900 Ranch Road 620 South, Suite C105 (Note new location)
Lakeway, TX 78738
512-263-9798

Cost: $20 for all 4 wines & light appetizers & cheese

St. Supery Wines will be visiting and showing their best wines including the Virtu and Elu Bordeaux-style blends and then the Dollarhide Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc & Cabernet Sauvignon.  This is a great chance to try the best of this family-owned Napa winery.

St. Supéry acquired Dollarhide ranch in 1982, a cattle and horse ranch since the late 1800s. Dollarhide is a 1500 acre property with steep and rolling hills, some flat lands and seven lakes. St. Supéry has planted fewer than 500 acres in grape vines at Dollarhide, so most of the property remains in a natural state, and is home to a diverse collection of flora and fauna. With elevations ranging from 600 to 775 feet above sea level, the diverse terrain and unique microclimate at Dollarhide are especially accommodating to Bordeaux grape varieties – those traditionally grown in Bordeaux, France – particularly Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. This estate vineyard is the origin of most St. Supéry wines and gives our wines distinct characters derived from the Dollarhide terroir.

Sobani Kitchen, Bar and Patio Reopens with New Menu Items, Interior & Chef

Sobani Kitchen, Bar and Patio in Lakeway will reopen Wednesday, November 28th after a brief closing to undergo interior renovations and develop a new casual American menu. The new Sobani will feature casual American comfort fare along with Japanese-inspired dishes. Among various updates, the restaurant now serves more plates geared toward sharing. Austin native James McMillan is the restaurant’s new executive chef. McMillan recently served as executive sous chef at Brennan’s Restaurant and was executive chef at Rattan Pan Asian Bistro, both of Houston. He brings extensive knowledge of Japanese cooking from working with his family’s restaurants, Kyoto, Origami and Brentwood Tavern.

Originally opened in November 2010 to impressive reviews, owner Taako Parker has revamped the concept to a more casual setting and menu that offers up a creative twist on American favorites along with a nod to her Japanese heritage.  Sobani’s new menu now has small and large plate categories with group-friendly pricing. Small plates include tuna tartar of sashimi tuna served on crispy wontons with wasabi aioli and balsamic glaze; Prince Edward Island mussels sautéed with fresh shallots, garlic and white wine; and grilled Shishito peppers tossed with lemon oil and sea salt. All are priced from $5-$12. Sobani’s soup and salad section offers a daily seasonal soup and variety of salads including Taako’s chicken salad served on spring mix with roasted bell peppers, green onions, cherry tomatoes, and edamame beans. Entree highlights include pork katsu made with Berkshire pork loin breaded and fried in panko, served with steamed white rice and tonkatsu sauce; the Sobani burger made with house-ground beef served on a brioche bun with spicy Japanese mayo, smoked apple wood bacon, white cheddar, red onion and a truffled fried egg on top with fries; and fresh Atlantic salmon served atop goat cheese polenta with sautéed green beans and citrus beurre blanc. Prices for entrees range from $11-$21.  On the sweet side, dessert highlights include a green tea crème brulee with mixed berries and white chocolate bread pudding served with fresh berries and amaretto whipped cream.

The restaurant now has a full bar of beer, wine and cocktails plus a special Happy Hour menu of small plates ($4-$6) such as white cheddar truffle mac and cheese; fried chicken sliders with house pickles. Happy Hour runs Monday through Friday from 3-7pm. Drink specials include discounted wines ($5-$7) and select cocktails for $7.  The bar provides a range of wines, local brews such as Fireman’s 4, Jester King’s “Noble King,” Austin Beerworks’ Pearl Snap and local sakes from Texas Saké Company.

“We’re excited about getting our loyal guests and new friends in to Sobani to see and taste what’s new. Chef James brings a lot of talent and energy to the kitchen, and we’re confident it’s going to be a real standout in the local dining scene,” said owner, Taako Parker.

Sobani, which means “neighbor,” in Japanese was created to deliver a fun, local dining destination. Nestled in the corner of the Lighthouse Market Shopping Center on RR 620, the renovated interiors feature warm colored walls, eclectic Japanese and jazz artwork and a trellised patio (which is also dog friendly).

Sobani serves modern American comfort fare with Japanese touches for lunch and dinner Monday through Friday. Located at 1700 RR 620 North in Lakeway, Texas, the restaurant takes reservations for parties of six or more and can host private functions for a range of sizes and occasions. Sobani is open Monday through Thursday from 11am-10pm and Friday and Saturday from 11am-12am.

The restaurant earned the 2011-2012 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. For up to date information, follow Sobani on Facebook and Twitter.  Visit sobani620.com or call (512) 266-3900.

Tacodeli Celebrates 13 Years With Anniversary Taco Contest

It is an undisputed Austin truth: Nothing eases a Sunday morning hangover, satisfies the lunchtime hunger demon and makes a catered party with coworkers worth punching the clock on your day off like a melt-in-your-mouth, freshly made specialty taco from Tacodeli. For 13 years, Tacodeli has met the daunting challenge of feeding Austinites’ faces with the best tacos in the land, and now it’s time to celebrate with — what else? — more tacos! The best little authentic taqueria in town got started in 1999, when the first location opened on Spyglass Drive. After building a loyal following of locals who would sooner give up their coveted concert tickets than miss out on their daily breakfast-taco fix, Tacodeli has become an icon of the Austin restaurant scene, with dozens of addictive menu choices, several locations and a mushrooming catering business.

Born in Austin and raised on the ingredients of Mexico City, Tacodeli boasts nearly 40 made-from-scratch tacos every day at its three Austin locations and at nearly every coffeehouse in town, not to mention the bearded Tacodeli mascot serving up taco favorites at Austin’s farmers markets. Additionally, every Austin event worth its weight in pinto beans features a variety of Tacodeli dishes on its catering table to please the throngs of Tacodeli devotees. From the savory Cowboy Taco and the aptly named Happy Taco, to the variety of vegetarian and seafood taco options, the always-popular breakfast tacos, authentic soups and salads, fresh-made sides and sometimes odd but always delicious daily specials, Tacodeli makes each and every item from scratch with fresh ingredients, many of which are organic and locally sourced. As the business has grown, Tacodeli has continued to support local farms and give back to a variety of area charities. From the beginning, Tacodeli’s philosophy has been to take care of its customers with a little bit of humor and a whole lot of flavor — a tenet that remains true to the company today.

In honor of the restaurant’s 13th anniversary, Tacodeli wants a taco inspired by … you! From Nov. 29 through Dec. 2, Tacodeli fanatics, Mexican-food enthusiasts and tortilla-stuffing virtuosos are invited to submit their most creative, clever and scrumptious taco recipes for an opportunity to win edible prizes, become the talk of the town and — best yet — have their taco recipe featured on the Tacodeli menu for a limited time.

Tacodeli is seeking recipe entries that are completely out-of-the-box; the more outrageous, the better. The winning entry should introduce Austinites to a taco they have never before been able to get their mouths around, and should — of course — be worthy of celebrating Tacodeli’s 13 delicious years. Entries can be submitted by responding to contest posts on Tacodeli’s Facebook page (www.Facebook.com/tacodeli) and by tweeting recipe ideas to Tacodeli (@tacodeli). The most imaginative, enticing anniversary-taco recipe will be selected by Tacodeli owners Roberto Espinosa and Eric Wilkerson the first week of December and announced via Facebook and Twitter. The lucky taco-recipe genius will immediately become an Austin celebrity, as the Austin Chronicle will publish the winning anniversary-taco recipe. The winner will also receive a $100 Tacodeli gift card good for their choice of Tacodeli’s nearly 40 options of fresh-made, flavor-packed tacos. And the winning anniversary taco will be made by Tacodeli chefs and featured at all three Tacodeli Austin locations during the whole month of January to kick off the New Year.

What better way to celebrate Tacodeli’s 13 years of making Austin happy (and full) with the tastiest authentic tacos in Central Texas than serving up a one-of-a-kind, Austinite-inspired anniversary taco? Who knows; maybe the anniversary taco will reach legendary Salsa Doña status!

Tacodeli has been cooking up the best tacos in Austin since 1999. Tacodeli has three locations: 12001 Burnet Road in North Austin, 4200 N. Lamar in Central Austin, and the original location at 1500 Spyglass Dr. in South Austin. The Tacodeli menu features dozens of award-winning tacos, from breakfast specialties and Mexican favorites, to daily specials and tortilla creations. For more information about the Tacodeli anniversary-taco recipe contest, visit Tacodeli on Facebook and Twitter. For more information about Tacodeli, call (512) 732-0303, or visit www.Tacodeli.com.
