Fonda San Miguel to host South African Wine Dinner

Fonda San Miguel to Host Cape Classics Wine-Pairing Dinner:
Menu Includes South Africa’s Most Highly Regarded Wines
Paired with Fonda Specialties

The exotic and elegant tastes of South Africa will mingle with the most beloved interior Mexican cuisine in Austin during a special spring season wine dinner event at Fonda San Miguel on April 25. Much loved for its classic and authentic Mexican fare, Fonda San Miguel will host an exclusive four-course wine-pairing dinner highlighting the restaurant’s traditional regional cuisine served alongside wine selections from Cape Classics, the largest importer of South African wines in the United States.

This special dinner event ($75 per person) will feature speaker Andre Shearer, the founder and CEO of Cape Classics, who will discuss the event’s showcased wines. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a reception amid the ambiance of Fonda San Miguel’s charming, art-filled space. The featured reception wine will be a 2011 Mulderbosch Cabernet Sauvignon from the Coastal region, a sexy and sophisticated dry rosé with a floral and fruity nose, and flavors of pomegranate accented with hints of pepper.

Guests will be seated at 7 p.m. for the first course, which includes Lobster Mango Ceviche and Fonda’s Ensalada de Salpicon paired with two Cape Classics wine selections: a 2011 DMZ Chardonnay from the Western Cape, a brightly acidic wine with alluring citrus aromas tinged with delicate hints of vanilla and spice; and a 2010 Ken Forrester Reserve Chenin Blanc, a full-bodied wine that harmoniously balances ripe fruit with delicate oak nuances. The second course features Fonda’s Duck Breast in Mole Costeño paired with a 2008 Rudi Schultz Syrah, which boasts an aroma of berries, pepper and cherries, and flavors of mocha, earth and spice. The third course includes Fonda’s delectable Venison in Mole Amarillo with Roasted Chile Poblano stuffed with Corn Budin. This course will be paired with a 2008 Glenelly Lady May, a Cabernet Sauvignon-Petit Verdot blend that displays velvety tannins and lush fruit flavors that are perfectly balanced by a bright acidity. The final dessert course will be paired with a 2009 Ken Forrester FMC Chenin Blanc, a benchmark of South African bottling that flaunts flavors of honeycomb, dried apricot and pear with undercurrents of toasted nuts, vanilla and spice.
